Part 1: Instruction and Intervention During the instruction phase of the literacy skills lesson, it is important to informally assess the students to identify those who are grasping the information and those who may need additional intervention. This assessment will guide the development of interventions to support the continued skill development of students who may be struggling. Collaborating with the mentor teacher, we can develop 2-3 interventions based on the informal assessment data. Here are two interventions, one to be incorporated in the inclusive classroom and another to be utilized at home: Inclusive Classroom Intervention: For students who are struggling with vocabulary and word recognition, an intervention that can be incorporated in the inclusive classroom is a word wall. The teacher can create a word wall display in the classroom, featuring high-frequency words, content-specific vocabulary, and words relevant to the ongoing units. The students can actively participate in the creation of the word wall, selecting and adding words they find interesting and challenging. The teacher can model how to use the words in sentences and encourage students to do the same. The word wall serves as a visual reference for students, supporting their word recognition and vocabulary development. Both the teacher and family members can encourage the students to engage with the word wall by incorporating the words into conversations, writing activities, and games. Home Intervention: For individualized support at home, an intervention that can be utilized is the creation of vocabulary flashcards. The student and their family can work together to create flashcards containing words from the word wall or specific words the student has struggled with during the lesson. The flashcards should include the word, its definition, and an example sentence. The family members can quiz the student using the flashcards regularly to reinforce word recognition and understanding. Additionally, they can encourage the student to use the words in everyday conversations or through writing activities. This intervention enables the family members to actively participate in their child's literacy development and provide support outside the classroom. In summary, the inclusive classroom intervention involves the creation of a word wall to support vocabulary and word recognition, while the home intervention utilizes vocabulary flashcards for regular practice. Teachers, family members, and the student all have important roles in implementing these interventions and supporting the student's continued skill development. Part 2: Reflection Delivering the literacy lesson and collaborating with the mentor teacher to develop additional interventions was a valuable experience.
