The COVID-19 pandemic was a global outbreak of an infection disease known as coronavirus. This disease caused severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, also known as SARS-CoV-2. (World Health Organization, 2024). As a result, the entire globe went into an emergency state causing everything to go into lockdown. Countries sealed their borders, schools retreated to distance-learning, and many employees were sent home to work. If people went out into the communities, they were required to wear masks and maintain social distancing. In turn, this had a huge impact on healthcare. To prevent the spread of the unpredictable, infectious, potentially deadly disease, most visits were conducted virtually or over the telephone. This method has been so effective that many doctors’ offices have opted to continue telehealth visits. Why should we discontinue the use if it has been effective? Telehealth is an effective means for delivery and retrieval of healthcare because it allows the patient to have more access to providers, helps to increase the emergency room performance, and they are more cost-effective for the patient and provider. Outline: I. Supporting Point 1: Telehealth allows the patient to have more access to providers. A. Topic sentence: Telehealth visits allow patients to have access to providers that they would not typically have access to due to various reasons. B. Supporting detail: Telehealth helps eliminate the shortage of rural providers. C. Supporting detail: Individuals can receive care from specialists that may not be located locally. II. Supporting Point 2: Telehealth visits help increase the emergency room performance. A. Topic sentence: Utilization of telehealth visits has helped lower the issues of overcrowded emergency rooms, and lower emergency room readmission rates. B. Supporting detail: Cigna and MDLIVE conducted a study showing that telehealth visits have helped reduce unnecessary emergency room visits by nineteen percent.
C. Supporting detail: Telehealth plays a large role in lowering the hospital readmission rate by allowing providers to follow up, catch issues, and treat the problem before the patient requires treatment from the emergency room. III. Supporting Point 3: Telehealth visits are more cost-effective for the patient and provider. A. Topic sentence: Telehealth visits help to mitigate travel costs for the patient and overhead expenses for the provider. B. Supporting detail: Telehealth lowers travel expenses because the patient is not burdened with fuel charges, parking fees, lodging if needed, loss of income due to time missed at work. C. Supporting detail: Telemedicine helps providers to lower overhead costs by lowering the need for excessive staff, reduce the need for office spaces, and use of unnecessary office supplies or equipment. IV. Countering Opposing Perspectives A. Topic sentence: Some providers do not offer telehealth visits due to the security concern that they believe is associated with the video or phone call visits. B. Supporting detail: There are cybercriminals that can hack into systems such as those used to provide telehealth visits and they steal personal information for their own use. Providers believe that using telehealth leaves them in a vulnerable state for cybercriminals to attack their practice. C. Refuting detail: There are many precautions that can be put in place to help minimize the risk of being attacked by cybercriminals. These precautions include, but not limited to, endpoint protection, encryption capabilities, wireless security, data loss prevention tools, privileged account management, and security incident response. Many of these precautions are used within a clinical setting and can be used within the telehealth setting as well. V. Conclusion A. Review central ideas presented in body and make connection to thesis: It is clear from research that telehealth visits have a positive impact on patients and the healthcare industry by providing patients with easier access to providers, improving emergency room performance, and being cost effective for patients and providers. The popularity of telehealth visits will continue to rise as patients and providers recognize the benefits of the service. B. Closing thoughts: Telehealth is a beneficial service that can continue to positively impact many people and providers. By informing others about the positive outcomes of telehealth visits, it will allow this service to flourish and continue impacting lives around the world.
