Lightning Lightning puts on a dramatic show at night, but the most powerful strikes occur in the morning. For this assessment, read the “Mornings Become Electric” article about when lightning occurs. Make sure to answer the questions in complete sentences using evidence from the original source article. Please note that using evidence from the article does not mean this is copied word for word. Make sure you summarize in your own words and do not solely rely on quoting information. 1. According to the study cited in the article, what time of day does cloud to ground lightning reach its electrical peak? (5 points) According to the study cited in the article, cloud to ground lightning reaches its electrical peak around breakfast time. 2. Differentiate between when the most strikes occur and when the strikes have the highest electricity, or energy. How and why does the article say this trend might affect students? (5 points) The most strikes occur around 2-6pm. Strikes have the highest electricity and energy between 6-9 am. This might affect students because 2-6pm is right after school and students go outside for sports and afterschool activities, and this can cause danger to them. 3. Summarize the original hypothesis of this study and explain whether or not it was supported by the data. (5 points) The original hypothesis of this study is stating that when lightening is showing up a lot, that each strike is weaker than when there is not a lot of lighting showing up. This wasn’t supported by the data because, “Lightning hits its power peak at the same time in every place, no matter when the most flashes occurred.” (Mornings become electric article). 4. The article states that “the main driving force behind lightning is the sun.” Explain this statement, using evidence from the article. (5 points) This statement is explaining that the lighting is stronger in the morning because it occurs near the time of sunrise. “The most powerful lightning consistently shows up in the one or two hours after sunrise” (Mornings become electric article)
5. Using what you have learned from this article and the previous lesson, write a well-formed paragraph describing why you think it is important to study weather. (5 points) I think it is important to study weather for many reasons. The first reason is that it can help people prepare for national disasters. By studying weather, meteorologists can predict and track natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornados and warn people about them so they can evacuate or shelter. Another reason I think it is important to study weather is because it can help farmers know when the best time to harvest and grow is. Knowing the weather patterns is very crucial to planting fruits and vegetables and more things. My last reason why I think it is so important to study weather is for aviation safety. Without knowing the upcoming weather, pilots and other people working in the aviation field would have no information if the flight were safe and this can cause many safety issues.
