Interpretation of Topographic Quadrangle Maps Exercise # 9 Name: Torialai Stanikzai 1. What is the approximate area on the map in square miles? What is the area in square kilometers? (Remember that 1 mile =1.62km.) Please show your work below: 8.3 Miles X 7.066 Miles = 58.6478 Miles2 13.446 Km X 11.44692 Km = 153.9153 Km2 2. Declination is the angular difference between the direction to magnetic north (m. n.) and true north (indicated at the bottom of the map by a “North Star”). Remember the decline changes gradually with time. What is the decline between true north and magnetic north indicated on the 1966 map? Express your answer in degrees. 15º What is the decline on the 1981 photo-revised map? 14º What is the declination on the 1954 map? 15.5º 3. A major type of information on a topographic map is elevation, which is shown with brown contour lines that connect points of equal elevation. Refer to Exercise #8 if you need more details about reading and interpreting the contour lines. What is the approximate elevation of the old Administration Building (Building 1) at Cal Poly Pomona? This is the “L” shaped building with the flag. Note that this building rests on a slope, so express your answer as a range of elevations. 780-800 Ft. 4. Where is the highest point on the map (use compass for directions: for example, SW corner of the map, or just N of an intersection)? What is its elevation (to the nearest 20-foot contour)? The map will not necessarily indicate what. The highest elevation is you just must look for it. Use what you know about the regional topography (i.e., where are the closest mountains?) to make an educated guess about where to start your search. SE Corner of the Map; 1460-1470 Ft.
5. What is the elevation of the lowest point on the map and where is it on the map? Hint: water tends to accumulate at low elevations as dictated by the law of gravity. West Side of the Map, just North of where the 10 Freeway leaves the map: 440-450 Ft. 6. What is the total relief on this map? (Relief is the elevation difference between the highest and lowest points on the map). 1100 Ft 7. On the 1954 version of the San Dimas quadrangle, what was the type of land use in the area immediately to the southeast of where the Cal Poly Pomona campus is today? Hint: the green dots are arranged in regular rows and columns. An orchard/farming 8. List three notable changes that occurred in the area between 1954 and 1966 (look for differences between the two maps). “Urbanization” is too general; try to find specific examples. Remember that you cannot say anything about changes in vegetation between 1954 and 1966, because the 1966 version of the map simply doesn’t contain any information about vegetation on it (the green overprint is optional). a. More freeways were put in, further breaking up the large swathes of land that used to be present in 1954. b. It looks like the Puddingstone Reservoir expanded between 1954 and 1966. c. It looks like Covina went from an agricultural area to a large city, rivaling Pomona in size. 9. List three notable changes that occurred in the area between 1966 and 1981 (look for differences between the two maps): a. Many more freeways have been put in as well as the overpasses that are required to go from one to another. b. It also appears that housing projects have started developing in the San Jose Hills. c. Overall, it looks like there is now little to no agricultural industry on the map between 1966 and 1981. 10. Describe at least two changes that have occurred in this area since 1981 (i.e., is there anything that exists today but is not shown in the 1981 revision?). Again, be specific. a. The Collins College of Hospitality Management is built as well as the general development of housing and several other buildings on the CPP Campus. b. Along what is now known as Valley Blvd., there is know a lot more industrial development as well as the shopping center is built further along Valley Blvd.
