6 th Grade, All Core Subjects EC-6 Modification 1: Create Tiered Assignments By creating tiered assignments this is allowing the gifted students to get the same instruction and assignment as the other students, but at a higher level of difficulty (Ullman). This allows the gifted students to get the same skill as the other students, but the assignments will be more challenging. One example of how I can apply this would be that if a problem asks for one way of doing something I can have them list two ways. This gives them more ways to think about the question. Another way I can help my gifted students is to allow them to use their skills and help others who are struggling. Students learn from others quicker, so this helps the gifted students use their higher thinking, and help those in need. Modification 2: Curriculum Compacting Curriculum compacting allows the teacher to make adjustments to the curriculum for the students who have already mastered the material (NAGC). By compacting the lessons or eliminating the parts that the students have already mastered, this gives them the opportunity to move on to higher thinking or more challenging assignments. One way I can do this is to create an assignment that the students will show mastery of, I can then use this data to see that they are ready for more challenging assignments because they have already mastered the lesson that the rest of the students still need to work on. This will help them from being bored, and being able to challenge their thinking. Modification 3: Pair Gifted Students up Research shows that pairing gifted students up boosts their achievement because they challenge themselves (Azzam). By pairing my gifted students up they are able to communicate and think on their level. This helps them think deeper, and also get ideas from each other. This also helps them learn that they do not know everything, and can still learn from one another. One way I can do this is if the students finish the worksheet early, there will be bonus questions on the back that they can work together to figure out. This can be a range of questions such as higher-level math, riddles, or making their own word problems. This gives the gifted students a chance to challenge themselves. Sources Azzam, A. (2016).
