Define text-painting and give an example of it in both a) something that we’ve studied in class, and b) a piece of music or song that you know. Text- painting is where something in the music reflects what the lyrics are saying; an example from class is an ensemble singing “Glory to God in the highest” where the the melody gets higher; an example from a song I know is a song called “High Enough” by K. Flay and theres a lyric that goes like “i’m already high enough” followed by an increase of pitch 8. Approximately when and where was opera invented/conceived of? What were its objectives, aesthetically and socially? How did it differ from other types of sung performances? What kinds of stories did early opera composers set to music? Opera was formed in the late 1500s by a group of Italian intellectuals, poets, humanists, and musicians called the Florentine Camerata. This group was interested in reviving the classic Greek and Roman’s theatrical tradition. Opera differed from other types of sung performances because it incorporated music as a form of storytelling and involved classical vocal techniques. Stories that opera composers set to the music varied from contemporary issues to adaptaions of literature and plays.
9. What is recitative? What is an aria? What genre do they appear in that we’ve studied? How do the two styles differ, both musically and in terms of narrative function? Recitative is style of singing that contains both regular singing and speech. An aria is a more structured piece of music suitable for a solo. They both appear in the genre of opera. These two styles differ , musically, because an aria is more musically structured whereas recitatives have a more speech- like aspect to it. In terms of narrative function , an aria can be seen as more expressive whereas a recitative help expand on the plot. 10. Name some characteristics of gospel choir music. In what communities did it originate? What are some typical topics of its songs? Does it tend to be syllabic or melismatic? Characteristics of gospel choir music are often contain the blues, highly rhythmic, and melismatic. Originated in slave communities. Typical topics include faith, praise, and lifes challenges. Gospel choir music tends to incorporates both syllabic and melismatic components; straight foward singing or notes sung on a single syllable. 11. Name three examples of an opera or a musical that we studied that tackled/tackles a relevant social or political issue (name the work, identify the composer, and identify the issue): 1. “The Death of Klinghoffer” by John Adams talks about Palestinian terrorist attacks 2. “Hamilton” by Lin- Manuel talks about the background of the founding fathers and the racial history of America 3. “Don Giovanni” by Mozart highlights the force women had to face at the hands of a man who didn’t care. 12. Give two examples of music that we’ve studied where an older melody is re-used as the basis for a new composition: 1. Judy Garland and Ariana Grandes “Over the Rainbow” II.
