Patel 1 Dharmik Patel Expository Writing September 16, 2021 Real learning and read education Cathy Davidson argues that the education system needs to prepare students for 21st century jobs. In "A Project Classroom Makeover," she emphasizes that "hierarchy based on credentials" is the foundation of conventional education (47). She argues that people believe that real learning only happens when students are forced to regurgitate the given information. If people want students to receive "real learning," classrooms need to foster coloration and creativity and not solely depend on the teacher's knowledge. The formal education that peoples think of when they picture a typical classroom does not prepare students for the future because what matters now has changed. To prepare students for jobs "that have a real future in the digital economy" requires the education system to put emphasis on creativity (Davidson 57). But the critics of Davidson declare that creativity is "superfluous to real learning and real education" (Davidson 57). So, what are real learning and real education? Although real learning and real education might be considered memorizing facts in the industrial age, real learning and real education consist of creativity and coloration in the technological age. To persuade the reader that schools need to change, Davidson uses the word "real" before the nouns "learning," "education," or "future." When combining the word "real" with those three nouns, she wants the reader to question their current interpretations of education. She wants the reader to understand that if education stays stagnant, students, the future of this world, will not attain the "real education" required for the future.
Patel 2 Although significant changes need to occur in the education system by changing laws and policies, Davidson argues that minute changes can start to happen right now in classrooms worldwide. These minute changes will help students today to prepare for a better tomorrow. One necessary change that needs to happen is that schools need to promote creativity and collaboration because they are "no longer a luxury but a necessity" (Davidson 58). So how do we get students to think creatively? Creativity is just the natural extension of our attention, and our attention flows towards our interests. Therefore, teachers can use the "science of attention together with the new digital technology" to ensure students see their interests reflected in the curriculum (Davidson 52). Davidson uses the word "attention" to explain that once students are interested in school, they will think creatively and collaborate with each other. Collaboration is the key to unlock the future, but it fosters new ideas. Although teacher-to-student collaboration can be improved, student-to-student collaboration needs to be improved. Davidson states, "the more expert we are, the more likely we are to be limited in what we can even conceive" (47). So, the teacher's expertise in the classroom inhibits collaboration if teachers act purely as authoritative experts. So, teachers need to take a step back and let the students enhance their own creativity through the different modes of collaboration made available by digital technology. All in all, the old-style classroom needs to change to facilitate things that are interesting to students. If students are interested in school, then they will be able to collaborate and increase their creativity.
