English Composition: Drafting Worksheet 1. Which topic from the assignment sheet have you chosen? (The assignment sheet is hyperlinked in blue on the actual assignment page). Describe the topic and your general take on it. What do you think of the topic and what do you think you might do with it? a. The topic I will be choosing is the third one that touches on the growth of the characters if they choose to open or fail too. My general take is throughout the film we see a lot of the people that are truly only thinking about themselves including Lady Bird, but we also see people that are continually helping other people throughout them film like the father, best friend, and theater teachers. The topic gives a wide genre to talk about. I plan to take this topic and run as I have a lot of thoughts about the characters and the way they act towards themselves and others. 2. What issue does the film raise in relation to this topic? How does the film raise this issue? In other words, explain how the topic you’ve chosen is manifested in the text. What question(s) or problem(s) related to this topic are posed by the film? a. This film takes place right 9/11 and I think that plays a major part in the way the characters are acting in this film. It raises the issue that after 9/11 people where self- absorbed in themselves that they had no idea what was going on around them. It raises many questions but one they stick out the most to me is the fact that after 9/11 there where many problems with the world. I find it most interesting that nowhere in the movie is there a mention of 9/11 and the problems it has brought. So, I ask this question is this something that the creator was meaning. 3. Considering the topic, you are planning to write about, what elements of the text do you plan to talk about? Think of this question as asking for the content topic of body paragraphs. What will these content topics demonstrate about the essay topic? Think of at least three. a. I plan to talk about the characters and the way they act. For example, Lady Bird is all over the place in the first part of the movie but towards the end we start to see her zone in on the way she is making people feel with her drastic actions. I want talk about the pain her mother has to be feeling and how her mother is showing it and in contrast I want to talk about the father and the silence he
English Composition: Drafting Worksheet brings. Lastly about want to address the brothers girlfriend and how drastically different they are from the rest of the family and the fact that the mother doesn’t even address that. 4. Write the first sentence or two of the essays. Remember—job one is to identify the topic. So, you may begin by summarizing the premise or another key moment or element of the of the primary source (the film). You must include the title of the film (italicized in MLA) and the full name of the director. a. In the movie Lady Bird by Greta Gerwig, we see a constant battle of characters verse the world and how much the effect of the world is making people feel. 5. Compose a working thesis: How does an element(s) of the text explore your topic? As a result, what defined meaning or reflection upon the world does this exploration produce? The thesis should be an arguable statement that asserts how a text works to define some meaning. a. Lady Bird's personal development journey, marked by the pain of growth, initially blinds her to the inner lives of others. However, the film underscores the importance of empathy and compassion as essential components of human connection. 6. Provide TWO quotations from the essay by McGrath below. Quotations from this required secondary source are not optional. These quotations should NOT be dialogue from the film. Essay without the required quotes from McGrath will not pass. a. “The formula is simple: flatter teenage recklessness by depicting it with false security and profundity; elevate the high school years as the best part of life (how depressing!); sprinkle in mocking caricatures of teenage types (the nerd, the stoner, the jock).” b. “There is “beauty in the flaws,” whether it’s acne-ridden teenage faces, Sacramento as “the Midwest of California,” semi-disastrous first romances, or the love of an overbearing parent.” c. “Either way, she doesn’t want to be what God or her parents made her.”
