Pace-Bonello 2 1.0 Introduction For this project, it was decided to choose an environment that had a similar issue as the ‘Theater Project’ from the Hart House. 1.1 Chosen Environment The environment that was chosen for this assignment is the female restroom located on the 28 th floor at the Chestnut residence. It was chosen as this facility is used by most female students who choose to work on the 28 h floor. 1.2 Relation to Hart House Project The chosen environment is closely related to the ‘Theater Project’ at the Hart House as the reasoning behind the choice is accessibility. Like the Hart House theater, this space must be more accessible to accommodate all students who use it, more specifically those with mobility issues. 1.3 In and Out of Scope The scope for this project is the set of stairs that descend into the restroom. Outside of scope is the area before the restroom and the actual restroom itself. The set of stairs in question can be seen in Figure 1. found in Appendix 6.1.1. 2.0 Observations While visiting the site, qualitative and quantitative data was collected. 2.1 Physical Attributes The main physical attributes are the restroom entrance and the stairs that descend to it. 2.1.1 The Entrance As you enter the female restroom you instantly need to turn left and descend a set of stairs to access the facilities. The dimensions for the stairs can be found in Figure 2. found in Appendix 6.1.1. 2.1.2 The Facilities
Pace-Bonello 3 After entering the restroom, you are faced with two sinks. To the right is a blank wall and to the left you will find the stalls. Aside from the stalls and the sinks there are not any more physical items in the restrooms of importance. 2.2 Occupants As a part of gathering evidence, it was decided to see how many students were entering the restroom on any given night. The range of students that entered during the day was 20-25. However, at night that number drastically increased to 50-60. 3.0 Data In order to find data for this project, primary research was conducted to get information from the students at the residence. 3.1 Surveys When looking at the amount of people who use the restroom, it can be easily proved that majority of the female students who work on the floor use the restroom purely out of convince. Following this assumption, it was decided to conduct a small survey to see how many female students use the restroom. The results are shown in table 1 which can be found in Appendix 6.2.1. 3.2 Additional Data Following the survey, further research was conducted to see how many students with mobility issues were struggling to access these facilities. As expected, the students said they were struggling with the steps that descended into the restroom. 4.0 Analysis Looking back at the observations previously stated, it becomes clear that the steps descending to the restroom negatively impact the students who need these facilities. Due to the negative impact this issue has, some students may have to take the elevators to their room to use the restroom, which would provide huge inconvenience to them. 5.0 Conclusion Without further research or data, it will not be possible to conduct any further primary research as secondary sources are limited. However, after conducting surveys as well as other variations of primary research a conclusion was reached that the female restroom needs to be more
