Stutlien 1 Adleigh Stutlien Professor Littman ENGL 1302 26 Jan 2024 “How Little Does the Government Provide Assistance for Mental Health Treatment?” In a world where the importance of mental health is increasingly and actively being accepted, it is still difficult to ignore how little the government provides assistance for mental health treatment. If you struggle with mental health, you know that it affects your overall quality of life, yet this issue leaves countless individuals battling with the weight of their struggles. I hope for increased government involvement in mental health care. My personal journey with mental health began at a young age with social anxiety and depression. Since my father was in the military, which caused us to move around the world every 3 years, this contributed a lot to my struggle with mental health. The lack of a stable, or what could be considered a normal life, took a toll on my mental well-being. On top of my personal battles, after the pandemic, my struggles with my mental health worsened. My second semester of my freshman year was interrupted by this foreign pandemic. Social distancing measures, lockdowns, and the general uncertainty everyone felt affected everyone, more than anyone expected. For me, the aftermath of the pandemic intensified my social anxiety. Never experiencing more than 3 years in one place throughout my entire life didn’t allow me to make fulfilling long-term friendships and after COVID, it was harder to be in social settings without my anxiety taking over. Despite the increasing acceptance of mental health issues in our society, government assistance remains almost nonexistent. According to a report by the World Health Organization, less than 1% of global health expenditure is directed towards mental health. In the United States alone, 60% of
Stutlien 2 adults with a mental illness didn’t receive any form of mental health service in the past year. The consequences of this neglect are widespread. So many people around the world that face mental health issues often find themselves trapped in a cycle, unable to access the care they desperately need. This not only furthers their suffering but also places a burden on other societal systems like the criminal justice system. A significant proportion of inmates grapple with mental health issues. The lack of accessible treatment contributes to the rising mental health crisis. It is so incredibly important for governments worldwide to recognize the urgency of this issue and take action to invest more time in increasing their assistance in mental health treatment. More funding could make a significant change in helping these mental health programs become more accessible to ensure that individuals receive treatment. Furthermore, destigmatizing mental health is crucial. In the past, needing help for mental illness has had a negative connotation tied to it and with our society becoming increasingly sensitive to those issues, with more assistance from the government, we could fully change that connotation from negative to positive. In conclusion, the current state of government assistance for mental health treatment needs immediate attention. My personal story and the statistics surrounding mental health care, serves as a testament to the pressing need for change. As a society, we must strive to create a world where mental health is prioritized, supported by the government that leaves no one behind in their struggles. The time for action is now.
