Complex Sentence: While Koalas are cute and cuddly, they also have sharp claws. Exercise 5 Combine the following sets of sentences into one sentence- either a simple, compound, complex, or compound-complex sentence. 1. Bob's tennis shoes had holes in them, so he needed new tennis shoes. He bought a new pair of tennis shoes, the new pair was from Pay less Shoes. 2. The students were not reading their assigned work, and their teacher, Mister Smith, was mad. He wanted to give them a quiz as a punishment for not completing their reading. 3. Also, cats are very clean animals, they can be trained to use a litter box. They do not need to be taken outside to go to the bathroom you will not be awakened at 3:00 a.m. to let them out. And, cats generally don’t require baths they bathe themselves and groom their own fur. They do not need a lot of exercise either, this makes less work for the owners. They do not need to be walked, just a few toys will keep them entertained and happy for hours. Cats are self-sufficient as well, they can survive being left alone for up to several days as long as they are given an adequate supply of food and water. Perhaps most importantly, in spite of their reputation for being aloof, cats can

Their reputation for aloofness probably stems from the fact that they are very independent creatures, it often seems like they don’t really need people. This means that the items in the series must be of the same type: five nouns, four verb phrases, three clauses, and so on. Faulty parallelism affects the clarity and flow of the sentence. The examples below show a faulty structure and ways to improve it. Some changes are necessary to ensure a parallel structure. Include a comma and a coordinating conjunction (usually and ) before the last item in the series. ❑ Faulty parallelism: The author discusses the inequalities in the economic system, the problems with unfair pay, and she has also some questions about common hiring practices. ❑ Effective parallelism: The author discusses the inequalities in the economic system, the problems with unfair pay , and the hiring practices of large corporations. ❑ The three items in the above sequence are now all noun phrases.
