2 The Pros and Cons of the Cornell Note Taking Method The Cornell Method is a note-taking strategy that was created by Walter Puak, a professor at Cornell University in the 1950s (University of Cincinnati, n.d.). His strategy for note taking was to have students separate their paper into three sections titled in-class notes, cue column, and summary. This note-taking method is a popular strategy among students and professors alike, but this note-taking method comes with both advantages and disadvantages. The Cornell Method is a great way to take notes for beginner and advanced note-takers. This way of note-taking is an easy way to set yourself up for success in your classes because it makes you think critically about the information in front of you (Herzing University, 2022). Since you are not copying word for word from your professor, this note taking strategy makes you put the information into your own words. This will allow for a deeper understanding and can help with recalling the information later. The Cornell Method has the advantages of encouraging active recall, getting you engaged in the material, and helps you get the main ideas from the information or lecture (Butler, 2023). The Cornell Method allows you to easily recall information for later use by remembering what is in the cue column. By reviewing the notes you took after class and studying them later this allows students to truly engage themselves into the material. Using the summary section of the Cornell Method allows students to easily wrap up what the lecture or information is about. The Cornell Method has its disadvantages since they are not a modern way to take notes, time consuming, and difficult to rearrange (Butler, 2023). In 2024 many things are now done on some form of a laptop or tablet, with not many people still handwriting their notes. This makes the Cornell Method outdated as it was created almost seventy five years ago.
