1.
Answer the following discussion question from Unit 2 about Raymond Carver's "Cathedral":
Given that a cathedral is a spectacular structure, why is this word a good tile for this story?
What is "built" in the story? Rewrite the question and share your thoughts in a paragraph. There
are no "right" or "wrong" answers, but you should refer to something you have learned in this
unit.
In Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," the title is meant to be taken as a methapor rather
refering to it's literal meaning. While a cathedral traditionally symbolizes grandeur and
spiritual depth, in this narrative, the cathedral helps us to explore deeper themes of
human connection and enlightenment. The "building" reffered in the story is not a literal
structure but emotional bridges and genuine understanding between the narrator and the
blind man.
Instructional Feedback:
Thanks for these thoughts toward the meaning of Carver's title within the context of his story!
2.
Review your evaluation report from the last unit evaluation. Name two specific concepts,
problems, or topics that you had difficulty with on this evaluation. Describe in detail the
problems you had.
I didn't have any difficulty in the last evaluation. Thank you.
Instructional Feedback:
You did a fantastic job on the past evaluation...keep up the great work!
3.
Your next graded assessment in this course is Project 2. In Project 2, you will answer this
question: Choose one of the stories you read in Unit 2. In a 600-to-1200 word (two-to-four
typed, double-spaced pages) essay, explain how characterization helps establish the theme
of the story. How do the characters reinforce the story's theme? Review the directions for Project
2 in your course and begin planning your essay. Write a paragraph in which you discuss
characterization in the story you have chosen. (Be sure to note the name and author of the
story at the start of your paragraph.)
Your teacher will respond with some additional
suggestions for your essay.
