ENGL 2152 Inge Fink “United Tools” Assignment and Scaffolding Exercise Like a mathematical puzzle, the “United Tools” assignment has only one solution, and you must find it by studying the documents and other information associated with the case very carefully, as you would in a real-life scenario. The situation is somewhat tricky because you are a young employee in a company, and you have uncovered an ethical problem that needs addressing. As is often the case in these things, your supervisor and other powerful egos in the company are not too pleased with the issue and would like to sweep it under the rug if they could. However, you cannot do that, not just out of obligation to the customers but also because the problem at hand could become an issue of liability for the company. Recalling a series of products is a tremendously expensive process, and you would step on a lot of people’s toes if you did this: You should not recommend this under any circumstances! There is no need to panic just yet: Your task is to inform a person in upper management (whose name is Inge Fink) of the issue, make a polite recommendation on the best (and least disruptive) course of action, and let your reader make the decision. So what is “the best course of action”? The key of the assignment is to figure that out. The questions below will focus your attention on certain bits of information that you should consider as you decide what to say in a memo to Ms. Fink in the corner office. Some of the information in the case documents is irrelevant to the case; some is crucially important. You need to figure out which is which. Read the posted PDF “United Tools Case Documents” very carefully and answer the following questions: 1. What is the problem Chel Thomas brings to your attention in his letter? Answer: Chel Thomas says that two of his customers are having issues with a tool breaking when pressure is exerted, one of which led to an injury. 2. Which one of your products is he concerned about? What precisely does he call this product? Answer: He is concerned about the UT904 pipe wrench. 3. What does Russ, your immediate supervisor, suspect is behind the complaints of tools breaking? Answer: Russ suspects the complaints are due to misuse of the tools.
4. What does Araya Trevas tell you about the pipe wrenches in question? How long, according to her, have they been selling the 904 series? Answer: Araya says that the wrenches sell very well and there have only been 4 complaints from retailers about the handle snapping, none of which led to injury. She says they’ve been selling the 904 series for at least two quarters. 5. Have there been any incidents with the pipe wrenches she is talking about? Answer: Yes, there were a few complaints about the balance of the wrenches and four complaints about the handle snapping. 6. What does Kyla Wallace, one of the engineers who designed the 9-inch pipe wrenches, tell you about the redesign of the product? Answer: Kyla says that the pipe wrench has been newly redesigned to solve the issue in question. 7. How long ago did the redesign happen? Answer: It happened two months ago. 8. Compare the information given to you by Araya Trevas and Kyla Wallace about the date of the wrench’s redesign and retail history. Is there a point where Ms. Trevas’s account does not quite tally with Ms. Wallace’s? Answer: Yes, if the redesign was only done two months ago, then they couldn’t have been selling the new product for two quarters. 9. Based on your answer to question #8, what might be the case with the complaints Ms. Trevas mentions to you? What might be the case with the complaints you received from Mr. Thomas? Answer: Ms. Trevas’s complaints may be due to issues with the 903 version. Mr. Thomas may be selling the wrong version.
