Experiment 3:
Student name: Jordyn Kaliszewski
Pre-lab section:
1) Introduction: Explain the theory behind this experiment in a paragraph between 150 and 250 words. (1.5 Points) For experiment 3, it is important to understand some basic concepts. These concepts include; what is electricity? What is a current? What is a resistor? It’s also important to understand electric potential/tension, Ohm’s Law, and series connection/parallel connection. As stated in the theory, the movement of electrons through a material is what we might call electricity. The number of electrons flowing through a selected area in a second is the simplest definition of current. The primary function of a resistor in an electrical circuit is to counteract resistance to electric current. This substance slows down electrons while current flows through it, lowering the strength of the current. The work of the electrical force on a charged particle divided by its value is known as the electrical potential, or tension in an electrical circuit. For Ohm’s law it is important to know three functions; 𝑉 = 𝑅𝐼
, 𝑅 =
𝑉
𝐼
, 𝐼 =
𝑉
𝑅
. A single "electrical path" connects components connected in series. Components connected in parallel are linked via several pathways. 2) Hypothesis: In an If /Then statement, highlight the purpose of the experiment. (1 point)
If two resistors are linked in series, then all resistors experience the same current flow.
Post-lab section:
1) Attach a picture of your signed data sheet here. (1 point)
2) Attach your analysis here, including any table, chart, or plot image. (13.5 points)

A variable resistor enables one to change the resistance. One design involves a horizontal tube of wire with a slider on the top. By moving the slider, one can change the length of wire involved, thus changing the resistance. Imagine a tube of wire with one layer made from wire 1.00 mm in diameter wrapped in a single layer with no gaps between the loops of wire ( the wire looks like a solid layer down the length of the tube). The radius of the tube is 2.50 cm. Moving the slider 1.00 cm changes the resistance of the variable resistor by 3.00 Ohms. What is the resistivity of the wire, and what is it made of?

Wire to be used in buildings and homes in the United States is standardized according to the AWGsystem (American Wire Gauge). Wires are assigned a gauge number according to their diameter. The scale ranges from gauge 0000 to gauge 36 in 39 steps. The equation for the wire gauge interms of the wire diameter in millimeters is the picture.
(a) What is the equation for the diameter in millimeters in terms of the wire gauge N?(b) You have two wires, one that has five times the diameter of the other. By how much do thewire gauges differ for the two wires? (Give your answer to the nearest integer.)
