GLG 110 Natural Disasters Name: __________________________ Investigation 19 Wheeler Park (Virtual) Trip We’re going to estimate the capacity of the Rio de Flag channel at Wheeler Park to carry water during a flood event. We’ll do this the same way as in the previous investigation, except that today we’ll use actual measurements of the Rio de Flag channel yourself. Just a reminder of what you looked at last time In a previous class, two students stretched a measuring tape across the channel, holding it flush with the ground and tight so it didn’t sag downward. Two more students used another tape to make depth measurements from the horizontal tape to bottom of the channel. Their measurements are recorded in the table on page 2. 1. Complete the final column of the table by calculating the area of each cell. (Each rectangle in the example figure above is one cell. Remember that area = width x depth.) 2. After you have calculated the total area, calculate the maximum possible discharge (m 3 /s) this channel could hold, assuming a velocity of 0.75 m/s. ( Reminder: The formula for discharge is Q = A×V , where A is the cross-sectional area .) 3. The discharge figure on page 2 shows the predicted flow at different points along the Rio de Flag during a 100-year flood event. Wheeler Park is 3.4 kilometers downstream from Crescent Drive (by the Pioneer Museum). What is the predicted flow at this location, from the figure? 4. Based on your two previous answers, would the channel at Wheeler Park contain a 100-year flood event? (continue to page 3)
