Growing up, I recall my stepfather saying, "Whatcha see is what you get." This saying was said when he knew someone was mad at him or when a person showed a different side of themselves he had never seen before. I came to find out that it was a lyric from a song by the group called The Dramatics. For a long time, I believed the song told the truth about a person's identity. I did not consider how the individual may see themselves in a totally different light. Schultze and Badzinski (2015) implied that the view of oneself can and tends to deceive us into believing we are what we think. This tendency becomes problematic in our day-to-day relationships with loved ones, friends, and peers. The lecture clarifies that our self-identity and social identity view revolves around how we communicate with one another. Petersen (2022) described that when we do not listen well, it causes confusion and pain (pg. 7). I took this to mean that depending on how a person delivers a message and how the receiver interprets that message establishes both self and social identities. This explains how a person can view themselves as straightforward, but to others, they come off as rude, very blunt, or inconsiderate. Our communication with others has to play a role in how we look at our self-identity and how our social identity may differ, right? For this module, three videos depicted self-identity, being misunderstood, and giving false pretenses. The first video had a coworker who self-proclaimed herself as cultured due to her travels. Yet she rarely allowed her new coworker to get a sentence about doing the work. Her interaction with the new coworker came across as overbearing and offensive due to her building herself compared to the new worker. I was a hint of criticism. The second video displayed a person who, despite how they think about themselves, took on the social identity given to them by others. The young man was being called a loser and troublemaker to the point he started to feel as if he was. He thought that no one would understand him because of his outward appearance. It was not until he listened to his father he realized that you never know someone's true identity by their outward appearance. The final video illustrated a woman who used the internet to portray someone she was not. I believe she lost her self-identity through her tragic event but was still putting on an identity that was not true. She suffered with authenticity in how she relayed her messages. The Bible mentions that then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19) References King James Bible.
