Once you have opened up the “Building Healthy Relationships?” Playbook, you will have access to the six cards for this Playbook, which will be referenced throughout this assignment and in future courses, but you will complete 5 cards . Differentiation Both intern teachers and student teachers can engage with the “Building Healthy Relationships?” Playbook based on their own teaching and learning experiences. Intern teachers, what SEL strategies are you currently implementing? Student teachers, where do you want to begin with strategies to Build Healthy Relationships in your classroom? Considerations “When teaching social emotional learning, we are looking at the whole person. The emotions connected to learning are inseparable.” (Angela Karem, Transitional Kindergarten Teacher) Through your Playbook learning, how can you reflect on ways in which you can bring the whole child into classroom learning experiences? How will you create an environment that is safe, nurturing and empowering for each child that enters your room?
Card #1: Social Emotional Learning SEL in Action: List 3 SEL strategies you observe the teacher utilizing in the video “The Power of Relationships in Schools”. Take time to get to know the students not just as students but as people too. Find and create shared experiences with students. Work to create a respectful, safe, and caring classroom community for everyone in the classroom. This will allow for students to feel comfortable enough to take necessary risks with a vulnerability that comes with learning. Show students that they matter. Creating genuine relationships with students will boost the overall morale of the whole classroom and encourage students to do the same with their peers as well. SEL Snapshot: Read about the purpose and intention of a morning Greeting with students. Describe the process you will use with your students (identify your grade level) to develop a morning greeting and your intended purpose of the greeting. Think About It: View the graphic titled “Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs ”. Choose one of the five core elements (self-actualization, self-esteem, love and belonging, safety and security, physiological needs) and suggest one strategy you can utilize to cultivate this competency in the classroom. One strategy I would use to cultivate self-esteem in my students is focusing on the positives and remember to provide more positive praise than negative. I would utilize lots of group activities where students must work with another student, they may not really know to teach them to show respect to others.
Act on It: Set an attainable goal for yourself that articulates a vision you have for building classroom community. One goal I will set is to make sure every student is treated with respect by modeling the appropriate behaviors and quickly addressing any disrespect and developing empathetic conversations.
Card #2: SEL and Relationships SEL in Action: Watch the Friendship soup recipe video posted about relationship building in the classroom. Describe three ingredients you would use in your friendship soup. 3 cups kindness 2 cup dependable 2 cups trust 1 cup fun Think About It: After viewing the video, reading the quotes, and reviewing the graphics, what are the core SEL values you will apply in your classroom to establish relationships between students? Which competencies and themes are being emphasized in your classroom, and which are areas for growth? How will you assess whether your students are developing healthy peer relationships? I will be focusing on mental health in my classroom by providing the students opportunities to develop their ability to cope with adversity in a constructive way. I will be able to assess growth in students by the way they work with each other and react to working in groups of unfamiliar students over time. Think About It: Think about your answers to the previous questions posed in the “Think About It” section. Identify strategies you might use in your own classroom and develop a plan of action using the provided downloadable form. Add to Your Personal Action Plan.
