1) What is Trump’s purpose in this speech? To assert his claim that the 2020 Presidential election stolen from him. 2) Give a brief (one-paragraph) summary of this speech. In a long address, Trump repeated his accusations of electoral fraud and other problems in the 2020 presidential election at the "Save America March" gathering. He accused certain Republican Party members, huge tech companies, and the media of undermining his attempts to contest the election results. 3) What type of language does he use to describe his supporters, the pollsters, the media, some Republicans, Democrats, and big tech? Give at least one example for each. Supporters: Praised as patriots and the real people who built the nation. Pollsters: Referred to indirectly through criticism of "suppression polls" that purportedly underestimated his support. Media: Described as "fake news" and the "biggest problem". Some Republicans: Criticized for being weak and not fighting hard enough, with specific mentions of "weak Republicans". Democrats: Called "bold and radical left Democrats" engaging in theft of the election. Big Tech: "coming into their own" and pirating the election, implying they were biased against him. 4) What are some ways he tries to cast doubt on the election results? By claiming machines switched votes from him to Biden and alleging illegal actions in vote counting. 5) How does he contrast Mike Pence with Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman? Giuliani and Eastman were praised for their courage, Giuliani for being gutsy and Eastman for being smart. Pence, however, was spoken of in hopeful terms. 6) How does Trump urge the audience to act? To walk down to the Capitol to protest the election results. 7) Does Trump provide reliable evidence that the election was stolen? (use the internet) According to https://www.pnas.org/ , no reliable evidence for systematic voter fraud. Numerous lawsuits related to the 2020 election claims were dismissed by courts. 8) Give five specific examples of logical fallacies in this speech. 1. False Cause: there must be fraud without direct evidence. 2.Straw Man: Misrepresenting the position of election officials and the media to make it easier to attack. 3.Slippery Slope: Suggesting that if the election results are not contested, it would lead to the destruction of the country without evidence for such a drastic outcome. 4.Using Emotion: charged language to
sway the audience instead of providing factual evidence. 5.Attacking: he attacked the character of his opponents by calling them "radical left". 9) Considering Trump’s appeals to pathos, logos, ethos, Kairos, organization, vocabulary choices, etc., how effective do you think this speech is? I think the funding of actions that resulted in a violent uprising, the use of logical fallacies, and the absence of strong evidence to support claims were extremely risky and irresponsible. 10) In your opinion, what are some strengths and or weaknesses of the speech? Strength: Strong emotional appeal to supporters. Weaknesses: Unsubstantiated claims, logical fallacies, and divisive language.
