Sebastian Herrera SPC3271 RVC 1241 Professor Michael Rodriguez 4/16/24 To: Citizens of The United States Hello, I am here to address a pressing issue that seems to always be overlooked in our society: the need for mental health reform. It is a subject that can affect the lives of millions of people but yet it lurks in the shadows being misunderstood. We cannot continue this pattern of constantly neglecting this issue so that people do not suffer. Mental health is as if not more important than physical health. Think about a world where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health. A world where seeking help for your mental health isnt being seen as a sign of weakness but a valiant attempt at self care. A world where the services for help are accessible and affordable and even integrated into our healthcare system. This is a world we must strive to create. First of all we should address a stigma that looms around the topic of mental health. Stigma regarding mental health seems to have a barrier when it comes to seeking help by giving feelings of shame and isolation. I believe we should push these old stereotypes and misconceptions that can fuel this stigma and substitute them with understanding and empathy. I believe that everyone should be treated with respect regardless of what issues they are dealing with mentally.
Second of all, we should expand access to mental health services so that everyone can access them. I see a huge difference between the demand for these services and the resources that are available. Some people are having to wait weeks, even months, just to have an appointment with a professional and I believe that this is very unacceptable. I believe that we should invest into the mental health infrastructure so that everyone has access to care they need in a reasonable time. In today’s world everyone is basically digital. That can include the integration of technology into mental health care shows us a promising look to expand access to some of the services mentioned before. Teleheallth services have emerged as convenient ways to connect people to mental health professionals. Just one issue, and that issue is how long it actually takes to speak to someone making it pretty limited in some areas. Additionally, apps on your phone can provide tools for self management such as tracking symptoms and practicing mindfulness. By embracing the technology we have, we can narrow the gaps in access and sometimes enhance the quality of care so that we can empower individuals to manage their mental well being. I believe investing more research into these tools is vital to unlocking its full potential for a better future. I also believe we should educate students about mental health from a younger age by integrating mental health into our school curriculums. By doing this we can foster a generation that is aware of mental health issues. Knowledge is power and I believe by doing this we can break that cycle of stigma and shame. Advocating for policies that prioritize mental health at state and federal levels are also an important thing to mention. This means increasing funding for research on mental health and improving insurance coverage for services related to mental health. By prioritizing these things
