Case Study Jeep/BUSS 103/Fall 2019-20/DME/CCBA/DU
Short Case Study-Jeep
The original Jeep was introduced during World War II when the US Army was looking for
a fast, lightweight, all-terrain vehicle. We don't know for sure where the name came from
but we do know that Jeep vehicles were quickly recognized by soldiers and civilians alike.
as the vehicle that could go anywhere and do anything.
The original Willys were the predecessors of today's lineup of Jeep vehicles. Today's Jeep
brand grew from a single product in 1946 (the CJ-2) to include the Wagoneer in the
1960's, which later evolved into the Cherokee in the 198o's. The CJs evolved into the
Wrangler in 1987. After 60 years of production, Jeep introduced the Liberty in 2002. All
of these vehicles had one thing in common: they were designed for off-road adventure.
Thus, they are "trail rated."
Reflected in pop-culture throughout several decades, the Jeep represents a unique
American "personality." Its exposure had its early…

CASE STUDY:
STUDENT ADVISING DSS
From (Jessup and Valacich, 2003)
Good student advising for course selection is one way to help retain students. Student advising is a time consuming activity for faculty involved in the process and is particularly important for newly starting students. Also it is particularly difficult to schedule advising sessions for part-time students. A university developed and implemented a Web based system to help students select modules. The system is linked to the university-wide database of student records so that it can consider a list of all completed courses as well as student interests when making recommendations.
The DSS (Decision Support System) adviser makes course suggestions while considering degree requirements, prerequisites, availability, and student interests. The system knows when courses will be offered and can analyse the transcript of transfer students…

Case Study: Montana Mountain Biking
Jerry Singleton founded Montana Mountain Biking (MMB) 18 years ago. MMB offers one-week guided mountain biking expeditions based in four Montana locations. Most of MMB’s new customers hear about the company and its tours from existing customers. Many of MMB’s customers come back every year for a mountain biking expedition; about 80 percent of the riders on any given expedition are repeat customers.Jerry is happy with this high repeat percentage, but he is worried that MMB is missing a large potential market. He has been reluctant to spend a lot of money on advertising. About 10 yearsago, he spent $80,000 on a print advertising campaign that included ads in several outdoor interest and sports magazines, but the ads did not generate enough additional customers to cover the cost of the advertising. Five years ago, a marketing consultant advised Jerry that the ads had not been placed well. The magazines did not reach the serious mountain bike enthusiast,…

Design Within Reach (DWR)
Design Within Reach (DWR) is one of the leading hardwood furniture manufacturers. While DWR has many small competitors, none of them controls a
significant market share. Like most furniture manufacturers, DWR sells its products to a wide variety of small furniture stores, none of which represents a
large percentage of DWR's sales. DWR can choose among many wood (an undifferentiated commodity) suppliers to find the best price and delivery. The
growth rate of the hardwood furniture industry has slowed considerably in recent years. Many consumers purchase "IKEA type" furniture made of
composite wood, which is substantially less expensive than hardwood furniture.
The level of direct competition in the hardwood furniture industry can best be described as
moderate because the slowing growth rate offsets the numerous firms in the industry.
low because of the numerous firms in the industry and the slowing growth rate
