CHMN 489: Church Ministries Capstone RE: Collaborative Learning Teams – Change Case Study Topic: Change Scenario Overview: We need to begin a Saturday night worship service. That seemed to be the dominant undercurrent of the ministry at Tenth Baptist Church. The church had been a mainstay of the community for more than 100 years. The area had seen significant growth over recent years. The population had reached about 500,000 and reflected a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. The church was landlocked in a downtown area and had recently built a family life center that offered many opportunities to build bridges to the immediate residents and businesses. The church had plateaued over the previous 6 years to about 1,400 in Sunday morning worship attendance including a Sunday night service that was drawing about 150 of mostly medians and retirees. They had seen the Monday morning Senior adult ministry boom from about 50 to over 300. There was one other church in the community that exceeded TBC’s attendance numbers. Community Church was exploding through what seemed to be low commitment demands of the congregation and exciting and contemporary worship times. CC had spike to over 5,000 from around 200 during a 6-year period. The growth was largely attributed to contemporary worship by most who had only watched from distance. Albeit this new growth had been only attributable to the moving of the spirit of God. Tenth Baptist Church had at least one thing in common with Community Church as well as every other church in the community. The reality was that the area was growing in the number of young families moving to the area, especially toward the west about 10 miles. Housing developments were springing up all over the place. Every church in the area was beginning new programs targeted at young families. From recreation leagues to new worship services and times. It was evident that TBC was poised at their downtown location to make adjustments or continue the growth plateau that had been looming for years.
The decision was made by the senior pastor to end the Sunday night service in light of the growing Monday morning senior adult ministry. He decided that TBC would need to establish a contemporary Saturday night worship service. At the same time, the decision was made by the senior pastoral team to also begin a Saturday night Bible study group time. This was also during the same time that the church was completing the new fellowship hall in the new family life center. The new fellowship hall had been designated as the location for the Saturday night service. It would not be completed until January, but the new service was set to begin the August prior and temporarily housed in the current worship center. The senior pastor and the music minister had decided that the associate music director would lead the music and platform segments of the service. The pastor had been there for 9 years, the music director had been there for 23 years. The statement now rephrased as a question perplexed lay leaders. “Do we need to start a Saturday night worship service?” Assignment Objectives: In this case scenario, students should develop a plan for making strategic change that will facilitate growth in the church. Specific attention should be given to the following questions: - How significant is the growth 10 miles west of the church? - Is it necessary to start a new service or revamp one of the morning services? - How can we set up the leadership to be on board with our proposed change? Groups will then submit a written statement of their findings on the assigned topic, and Group 5 will present their plan before the class. The written submission and presentation should include biblical exposition, cultural exegesis, as well as practical application for church leadership. Assessment Criteria:
