Laney’s Strengths and Current Standing Laney is an active student at Rosa Parks Elementary School. Soon after, Laney started presenting problems in her academics. Therefore, an assessment was given in order to determine her problem. As the results had been received, the problem was noted and Laney was moved to the Tier 2 interventions. Within Tier 2, the goals and interventions were set into place. During the whole next quarter, information should be gathered and she will need to be closely observed. In order to make sure the interventions are effective while meeting her goals. Laney will be observed and monitored for a six-week period. She did meet her goal for the first three data points, but she did not meet the standard for the last three data points. Based on the data, it can be noted that Laney needed a change in the instructional approach. She is doing a tremendous job in all areas of her academics, besides in reading/literacy. Concerns When looking at the information and according to the four-point rule, Laney is currently demonstrating. However, she is below the goal line for the last three data points, which makes the issue of concern to make a determination as to what actions need to happen, in order to help Laney get back on track with meeting her goals. The very first option to try would be to extend her time, this will give her plenty of time to meet her goals. Within the six-week time period that was developed in Tier 2 interventions, it could have been possible that it was done too quickly. Laney has made good progress within Tier 2 interventions, but the current problem might not be due to instructional materials, style, or setting. The problem could possibly be from the pace that was expected of Laney.

Laney’s Description and Interests Laney has no physical or medical problems at the moment, that would help with explaining her issues in decoding the problem. It is not known if she has any social skill issues or any environmental/cultural issues. As well as, motivational issues for the problem to stem from. Outside of school, Laney enjoys dancing, listening to music, and spending time with her family and pets. All of her teachers enjoy having her presence in class and she gets along with her peers. Laney is great at communicating her own needs, participating in the group discussions, and answering oral questions that are from a read aloud story. Reflection All students come from different backgrounds and are from a variety of ethnic groups. Each of the students have different values, speak different languages, and believe in different ways. This is what they learn from their home. “Maintenance or replacement of the home language is often affected by sociolinguistic factors, including physical and social contexts of language use and the perceived attitudes and values attributed to languages,” (Puig, 1999). Each of those mentioned play an important role in how a student learns and how they participate in their educational journey. A teacher and school administrator should get to know their students and their families that are within the walls of the school. We as educators get to know our students and their families background, which can help us to better understand the student and family in the academic learning process. This will help us to learn about their academic abilities and weaknesses. Not every family home within the district may speak English as their primary language. Some could allow for their children to use words that could be deemed inappropriate in school and their values could be different from those of your own. Educators should have an
