ARTICLE CRITIQUE Purpose of Study, Research Methods, and Results For the past decades, the state of the public health system has been failing in a number of areas. As a nation, we spend billions of dollars on our healthcare, but not enough care given. This study is to show service member and veterans go through, dealing with healthcare, and how we can use interdisciplinary research to solve this complex problem and crisis we are facing. In the military, mental health has been a concern for many years and it’s affecting not only military service members but the general public. United States service members are at the top of the chain for contracting mental health disorders (Mclnerney, et. al, 2022). A direct effect that pushed this disorder over the brink was the 9/11 attacks on our country. In the article Resilience enhancing programs in the U.S. military: An exploration of theory and applied practice, it will show a theoretical approach taken, resiliency, trauma and programs that are put in place to help with mental health. The study of the resilience program was conducted by healthcare personnel in the military and was tested by the United States Army, Airforce, Navy, and Marine Corp. Some patients who are in the resilience program are service members that have been previously deployed and have returned with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The method that is used as a substitute method is to test psychological readiness in military units that is a resilience theory. Another method within this study is to have a one-to-one interview to get a better understanding of how this is affecting our soldiers. After conduction the research, it should that soldiers seem to fall into categories. One category is institutional attitudes which is the attitudes in the military that creates multiple barriers for military members who are seeking
ARTICLE CRITIQUE mental health care (Mclnerney, et. al, 2022). For centuries the perception of soldiers is to be always tough, show no weakness, and should be able to handle anything thrown their way. This is one of the root causes of mistreating mental health because a soldier will be seen as weak, not capable of carrying out his job, and will not reach out for help in regard to their mental health status. Interdisciplinary Focus After reading the article in its entirety, there’s a couple of disciplines that stood out for me and they are Military resilience, public health, and Psychology. These disciplines are relevantly discussed in the article. The article discussed one to one interview which can be considered counseling sessions and services also one of the main the route because that is a barrier for soldiers is keeping up the façade as being tough and reporting that having a mental issue will de-soldier them. The discipline of Military resilience includes the ability of a military personnel to adapt when facing adversity such as trauma which also contains key components. In the military community, the perception is not to be seen or act weak and if seeking therapy and treatment for a mental health crisis then you would have to do it secretively even if the military service member is suffering from a great deal of PTSD, they still would do it secretively due to the stigma of the military. Shareholders, healthcare providers, agencies within the public and community health field can change the perception and have the military take a second look at how they are treating mental health and possibly work together to combat this issue and change the perception for good.
