Present Possibilities: "Can We Get There from Here?" Paper Laura Coplai School of Education, Liberty University, EDUC 639: Trends and Issues in Educational Technology Dr. Heather Keahey April 21, 2024 1
PRESENT POSSIBILITIES 2 Abstract The following essay examines educational technology and the impact that technology has had on education. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, educational technology has become a forefront, more so than it has ever been. Many school districts had to take a look at their technology plans and assess changes immediately. Taking a look at the present use of technology in the classroom and how it influences various aspects of the classroom, educators are able to examine what they have had to learn or incorporate into their classrooms. Many educators have incorporated video usage to engage their students, utilized technology such as tablets or smart boards, and have become more facilitators, encouraging students to become empowered in their own learning. All of this has helped improve the educational technology around the world. However, the future of educational technology is going to rapidly change. The concepts of artificial intelligence and augmented reality become a possibility in the education realm. It is important for educators to stay up to date on their technology trainings to be able to keep up with the increase in technology. Keywords : educational technology, COVID-19, current technology, artificial intelligence, augmented reality
PRESENT POSSIBILITIES 3 Present Possibilities: "Can We Get There from Here?" Over the last few years, technology use in education has grown exponentially. All over the world, many schools had to implement and catch up on technology if they had not already during the COVID-19 pandemic. School districts around the world had to make sure they had the technology to support their students from learning at home. The increase of technology use in the classroom is also supportive for the teachers’ abilities to move towards facilitators, to help the students nurture their critical thinking skills and encourage problem-solving. Educators now use technology throughout the classroom, which has had a positive impact on their students’ educations. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, educational technology has played a vital role in today’s classrooms and will do so into the future. Educational Technology and COVID-19 During the COVID-19 pandemic, many school districts had to improve their technology resources for their students and educators alike. “Due to the sudden closure of schools and the sudden transition to online learning, numerous issues on the difficulties and challenges the faculty members and students face in the use of online education were observed in connection to the concern on the quality of education received by the latter” (Avila, et al., 2021, p. 1). Many students did not have the technology resources available when the schools shut down. During the beginning of the of the school year, the students were able to learn how to use their tablets for some programs. When the pandemic started, the tablets then had to be sent to the students and the schools had to figure out how to improve their educational technology needs. Many educators used a lot of web-based technology. “The adoption and implementation of (web- based) educational technologies crucially depends on teachers' willingness to acquire the necessary skills and an open mindset to actually use them” (Dincher & Wagner, 2021, p. 468).
