I. Cultural Diversity: In this section, you will explain the importance of understanding and being sensitive to cultural diversity. A. Reporter: What is so important that we understand cultural diversity in a time like this? Who cares if we’re all different? What does it matter anyway? 1. Your response: It is very important that we understand cultural diversity because it helps us to understand certain behaviors. Cultural diversity is also important in crisis situations too. For example, the water crisis in Flint. Michigan happened in a poor part of Michigan and the government was trying to save money by opening the water treatment plant back up instead of continuing to use Detroit water. 2. Your Response: During the beginning of the flint water crisis many people did not think that the water was contaminated until people came to the hospital with Legionnaires disease. Even though those people were coming to the hospital the government was still telling the civilians that the water was safe to drink. 3. Your Response: The water crisis that happened in Flint, Michigan affected the animals in Flint because people were giving their pets water from the tap that was contaminated with lead. Because the people in Flint did not get the confirmation that the water was not safe to drink till much later people were giving their pets tap water which had lead in it and made the pets sick. B. Reporter: Human culture might seem more complex than I initially imagined, so how does it relate to the crisis we’ve witnessed here? 1. Your Response: Some anthropologists can help when crises such as these crises can occur by looking into what caused the crisis. For example, in Flint the government could
have spent more time checking the water pipes and checking the water for any toxins. How anthropologists can navigate the crisis is by letting the public know what is happening and by adhering to the customs of the culture. For example, when the Flint water crisis happened, I could use the beliefs of the people to inform them that the water is not safe to drink by telling them. II. Anthropological Methods A. Reporter: Alright, can you explain to the audience how you came to this conclusion? 1. Your Response: The ethnographic method is an appropriate method for investigating this crisis because it is a prolonged and intensive observation of the community. This is an appropriate method for the Flint water crisis because anthropologists had to be in the community for a long time to fully understand what is happening in the community. For example, in Flint an anthropologist could learn more about what happened studying there for a year versus studying there for a day. B. Reporter: How did these people let you study them? Why did they let you? You most likely upset them, right? 1. Your Response: The type of reactions that I might receive would be both negative and positive because of how people would react to the news of the water crisis. The negative reaction might be that the government was lying to them. For example, when people turned on their tap after the water treatment plant was turned on, they were outraged that the water was brown and smelled. I do not think that there would be any positive reactions because of how many people were affected and how outraged they were at the government for lying to them all this time.
2. Your Response: An objective lens is important when studying a group of people because many people, including the government, have different beliefs. For example, the government in Flint, Michigan believed that the water was safe to drink. This lens will not help calm the fears of the people because of how the government lied to them. III. Cultural Connections : A. Reporter : Do you think this crisis could happen here, to us? 1 . Your Response: The cultural factors that would not allow this to happen here is that the government has a system in place to keep the water from getting any toxins in it. For example, the government of St. Augustine listens to its citizens and whenever a problem arises, they are quick to respond. Another example of a cultural factor is that St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States and to keep tourists coming the water must be clean. 2. Your Response: The environmental factors could not allow this to happen because the river that we get our water from is kept clean and they check the PH level of the water to make sure it is not getting polluted. For example, the city of St. Augustine routinely checks contaminants in the water from January 1 st through December 31 st . Another example of an environmental factor is that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection performs an assessment on our wells to see if there are any contaminants. 3. Your response: The biological factors in my family could not allow this crisis to occur because we can email our mayor and tell them how we feel. For example, if a water crisis did happen here, we could email our mayor telling them to get help and try to fix the problem as fast as they can.
