Complete all activities before submitting the lab. Each lab counts for 20 points and is about 1.42% of the total grade. Lab Goals This lab will help you learn the following: how to do video analysis Working on a spreadsheet plotting a chart. Introduction This lab uses a video of the launch of the NASA/SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket during the first few minutes of its flight. The Lab is divided into three activities. Use this video to collect the data. Watch SpaceX Falcon 9 and Dragon rocket launch In this lab, you will report your data in a spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel. Make sure to save this file and submit it together with the Microsoft Excel file as your report. Activity 1. Collecting Data from the Video As you watch the video, notice that in the lower left corner of the screen the velocity of the rocket is given in km/hr. You will see this information beginning at about 17 seconds after launch. Use the launch counter for the time, e.g., T+00:00:45 is a time marker of 45 seconds after launch. 1. Open an Excel spreadsheet and record the velocity of the Falcon 9/Crew Dragon for the first 3 minutes in increments of 5 seconds, beginning from T+00:00:20 to T+00:03:00. You should have two columns: one column for time (in seconds) and a second column for velocity (in km/hr). 2. Add a third column with the velocity converted to m/s. Label all your columns and include the units only on the labels. Page 1 of 3
NOL PHY 201 3. Make a graph of velocity vs. time using the data with units of m/s. The velocity should be on the vertical y-axis and the time on the horizontal x-axis. Use "Scatter plot", do not connect the data. 4. Paste a copy of this graph here. (Keep your Excel file). Activity 2. Analyzing Data 1. The last part of your data should show a much different shape than the initial data. At about what time does this change happen? What happens in the video at that moment? Why does this cause the shape of the graph to change? 2. Note : Future questions will refer to the data prior to the time you identified in the previous question. 3. Without doing any calculations, write what happens to the acceleration of the rocket as time progresses starting from the beginning of the motion? How do you know from looking at the graph? 4. Think of some reasons why the acceleration behaves the way you described in the previous question. What is going on with the rocket that may cause this? 5. About 1 minute and 35 seconds after launch, the announcer makes a comment about the acceleration of the rocket. What is the exact phrase that the announcer uses to describe this acceleration? 6. Based on what the announcer says, calculate the value of the acceleration of the rocket in units of m/s 2 at this time. 7. Use your data for the time interval (100, 150) s and make another "Scatter Plot" of velocity versus time. Velocity should be on the y-axis and time on the x-axis. Page 2 of 3
